Week 4 DevLog


Hello, this week we made a prototype and finished the artbible.

Game Concept

The boss of the tribe is searching for a successor and his 4 sons all want to take his spot! They try to please him as much as they can with cooked meat but sabotage eachother in the process.

 Art Bible

We also made a lot of decisions for the art style. We allready decided to have a stone so we should make the art style also fit in the story.       For this we allready made some concept art for the players, boss, chickens and some game objects.


For these skectches we mostly gave feedback about the players because we thought they look a bit old in comparison with their father, the alpha. We had the idea th add more hair and some jewelry such as bones.


We really liked this concept so we went working further on this one, still we weren't sure about the arms but this we could change later.

We also made a lot of other decisions about the artstyle such as the color palette, atmosphere, shapes,scaling, UI - HUD, RFX,...

In the end we came to this result for the overall look of the game combined with his UI.


Environment

We made a couple of environments to test out the interactions between players, game objects, environment and the boss. We want to let our players have a lot of interaction with eachother so they can sabotage eachother more easily. 




We decided to work further on the last blockout. This because we think in this scene the players will have the most interaction with eachother because they have to cross their paths very often to reach the throne and grab a stone. Also we like the scale and composition. We were a bit struggling with the height difference and their visibility because we were having some blind spots from different angles.

 

- Pink: Fire places. Now we have 2 fireplaces but we will test later if its better to keep it like this or change it to having only one fire as this will trigger more interaction with the players

- Blue: bush to pick up herbs

- Purple: Trees and forest

- Green: Groundplane

 

we also decided to use modular assets for the mountain and slopes.

After this we wanted to see how the scale of the objects will influence the environment. Because we had the feeling our characters were to small in the scene. Also the Animals will take a lot of space if they spawn.

 

now we have cows for the animals but in the end we are going for more chicken-like creatures.

Prototype

The prototype is just a test whether the game is fun so there are still some features missing that should be in the final game. Currently the player can run around and pick up items, you can hold 1 stone and 1 piece of meat. You can pick up the stone from the boulder object and use the stone to kill an animal (blue object). Once the animal dies, the stone breaks and meat drops for you. The meat can cooked and given to the boss or you can eat it yourself.

The player has a hunger mechanic where they die if they run out of hunger. They can eat meat to fill it with a small amount or eat cooked meat to fill it with a large amount. You can cook meat on the fireplace, just drop the meat on there. and after a couple of seconds it changes to cooked meat. You can then pick up the meat again and either eat it or give it to to boss to increase his happiness with you.

The players can also interact with eachother, a slap without a rock pushes back the other player, hitting a player whilst holding a rock makes them drop their item and stuns them for a vey small amount of time.

The boss is supposed to have some kind of punishment mechanic if he is not satisfied, but this is not yet in the prototype.
